about pat jones
Everything I needed to know, I learned from reading Call of the Wild, listening to Joe Strummer, and late night talks at Denny’s with other armchair philosophers. My drive for storytelling stems from my curiosity about life: the choices we make, why we make them, and the outcome of those choices.
I grew up in an insulated universe: the suburbs. My lifeline to the outside world was late night cable TV, where I was exposed to other cultures and diverse ways of thinking. It made me want to tell the stories of those I saw around me. There was only one avenue of expression for me: creative storytelling on film and video.
I spent a lot of years in the blue collar world, where I learned common sense and the value of hard work. Eventually I was able to go back to school and chase my dream. After many semesters of commuting from Colorado Springs to the Colorado Film School in Denver several times a week, plus working full time, I was in possession of a degree in Film and Video Production. Pretty much since then I’ve been working at K R D O, the best local avenue for me to earn my chops in shooting and editing. It’s been a great experience.
My career at K R D O began in the studio, as a camera operator for the morning news broadcast. It wasn’t long before I progressed into becoming a full-fledged news photog and editor, a position I still hold. My job affords me the opportunity to record both the dramatic (structure fires) and the mundane (school board meetings) -- the daily human drama. I am constantly faced with the challenge of storytelling within a very short time frame, and sometimes tasked with making the ordinary seem more interesting than it really is. This has certainly honed my shooting and editing skills to a fine edge. I’ve learned to cut down to the bone of any story, to do my job with a fine-tuned sense of efficiency, finding and enhancing the pivotal moment. My fascination with people and their stories influences everything I shoot.
5 things about me:
1. My favorite hockey star of all time is Bobby Orr.
2. I own a Fender Telecaster because that’s what Joe Strummer played.
3. My personal hero is Wim Wenders. I actually got to meet him once.
4. When I retire I’m going to surf every day.
5. Doritos help me think more clearly.
